Reproductive Health and Family Planning Needs among HIV-Infected Women in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Conclusions: HIV-infected women in sub-Saharan Africa have myriad needs related to reproductive health, including access to high-quality family planning information and options, high-quality pregnancy care, and trained providers. Integrated services that help prevent unintended pregnancy and optimize maternal and infant health before, during and after pregnancy will both maximize limited resources as well as provide improved reproductive outcomes. Factors affecting acceptance of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling services among outpatient clients in selected health facilities in Harar Town, Eastern Ethiopia
Conclusion: There is evidence of the relatively increased acceptability of PITC services by outpatient department clients. A program needs to be strengthened to enhance the use of PITC; the Ministry of Health, Regional Health Bureau, and other responsible bodies – including health facilities – should design and strengthen information education and communication/behavioral change and communication interventions and promote activities related to PITC and HIV counseling and testing in both health facilities and the community at large. Prevention Interventions for People Living with HIV in Military Settings.
Abstract Military prevention programs and healthy living programs were developed in the mid-1980s to manage and support newly HIV-positive military personnel in the US military. Since then, a program developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with support from the Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP), called Positive Health, Dignity and Prevention (PHDP), is currently being rolled out by DHAPP in partner militaries. The program, designed to reduce HIV transmission, is a package of interventions for people living with HIV (PLHIV), including risk reduction counseling, condom provi...

Short-Term Transfer of Knowledge Assessment in the Military International HIV Training Program (MIHTP).
Abstract The Military International HIV Training Program (MIHTP) was established in 2002 to address the overwhelming needs of international military personnel concerning HIV and AIDS prevention, care, and treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine short-term knowledge transfer in trainees attending the MIHTP by comparing data collected from pre-training and post-training knowledge assessments. We used identical 40-question multiple choice pre-training and post-training assessments to determine the short-term transfer of knowledge of international HIV military physicians attending the MIHTP. Findings rev...

The challenges of timely and safe HIV disclosure among perinatally HIV-infected adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa
Purpose of review Improved access to antiretroviral therapy has resulted in an emerging population of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Full disclosure of an HIV diagnosis includes naming HIV/AIDS and is an important step in coping with HIV. We reviewed the recent trends in the rates of children/adolescents who have been informed of their HIV infection according to age groups, the barriers and the evaluated interventions aimed at improving the HIV disclosure process to ALHIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent findings Literature shows that HIV disclosure remains challenging in sub-Saharan Af...

Healthcare workers' knowledge of HIV-exposed infant feeding options and infant feeding counseling practice in northern Nigeria.
CONCLUSION: The practice of infant feeding counseling among HCW in Nigeria is associated with sex, knowledge, and profession. Our findings may inform the development of targeted training programs for HCW in similar settings. PMID: 31870269 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

HIV awareness week- Southampton
This year, Southampton HIVE’s committee decided to set themselves a challenge of holding an entire week of events in the run up to World AIDS day to fundraise for SIC and increase awareness. After many weeks of preparation, moments of stress and hard work from everyone, wearing our red T-shirts and ribbons we were excited for the week ahead to spread the word! We kicked off the events on Monday 25th November with a teacher training evening to recruit new teachers. All who attended were very enthusiastic and have already been to schools to get involved! With piles of tins and tupperwares full of wonderful red cakes, cook...

Sequence-Based Predictive Models of Resistance to HIV-1 Integrase Inhibitors: An n-Grams Approach to Phenotype Assessment.
Abstract Amino acid substitutions in HIV-1 proteins critical to the viral replication cycle have the potential to undermine successful inhibition of those targets, with some mutations leading to either reduced susceptibility to certain medications or complete drug resistance. Phenotypic tests are best suited to quantify the effects of complex mutational patterns on drug resistance; however, the relatively high cost and long turnaround time associated with phenotyping has increased the demand for in silico drug-specific models capable of accurately predicting phenotype directly from the target protein sequences. Th...

Gist Representations and Communication of Risks about HIV-AIDS: A Fuzzy-Trace Theory Approach.
Abstract As predicted by fuzzy-trace theory, people with a range of training-from untrained adolescents to expert physicians-are susceptible to biases and errors in judgment and perception of HIV-AIDS risk. To explain why this occurs, we introduce fuzzy-trace theory as a theoretical perspective that describes these errors to be a function of knowledge deficits, gist-based representation of risk categories, retrieval failure for risk knowledge, and processing interference (e.g., base-rate neglect) in combining risk estimates. These principles explain how people perceive HIV-AIDS risk and why they take risks with po...

Peer supporter experiences of home visits for people with HIV infection
Conclusion: The findings suggest that to maintain a stable and effective peer supporter program, such positions require financial support, training in how to prevent and manage stress associated with the role, and a well-developed program of education and training. Keywords: human immunodeficiency virus, qualitative research, workplace experience

HIV viral load scale-up: multiple interventions to meet the HIV treatment cascade
Purpose of review: In 2015, the WHO urged countries to provide ART to all people living with HIV, irrespective of their CD4+ cell count, this new recommendation supports the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS elimination targets. However, to meet these aims, urgent scale-up of viral load testing is critical. The multiple interventions in the healthcare system required to support scale-up of viral load testing are reviewed here. Recent findings: It is estimated that 18.2 million individuals are accessing antiretroviral therapy, consequently this will cause significant demand for viral load monitoring; however, at t...

HIV stigma reduction interventions among health care providers and students in different countries: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review supports the effectiveness of in-person educational interventions at reducing HIV-related stigma among health care providers across countries. Comparisons of delivery modes of interventions indicated that educational interventions delivered by patients' testimonials and peer education strategies are more promising than lecture-based teaching methods. Further studies are needed to assess long-term effects of interventions on clinical behaviors and practices.PMID:34872477 | DOI:10.2174/1570162X19666211206094709
